ROBERT ROYCE was Chr. 3 Nov. 1605, at Ketton cum Tixover, Rutlandshire, England, the son of William Royce and Jane Casebird. He was a shoemaker by trade which means that he probably served an apprenticeship during his teens. An apprenticeship normally started at age fourteen and ran for seven years. Thus at age twenty-one he would be free to marry.
Robert was married, 8 Apr 1627, to Mary Jugkson or (Jackson) at Stamford St. Michael, Lincolnshire, England. Six children were born to this couple in England, the first two christened at Stamford All Saints were sons named John (20 Dec. 1627 and 29 Jun 1629, (both died in infancy) The last four were christened at Stamford St. Michael. A daughter, Mary, 10 Jul 1631, John (aka Jonathan), 21 Apr 1633, Sarah, 8 Feb 1634/5 and Nehemiah, 30 May 1637. (Origins of Robert Royce of Connecticut; Charles Julian, 2006 see Memories.)
Exactly when Robert Royce and his family came to New England is unknown. However, he was an early settler at Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut which was founded in 1639 as "the plantation at Pequonnocke", by the Reverend Adam Blakeman (pronounced Blackman) and William Beardsley. They were accompanied by either 16 or approximately 35 other families depending on your sources who had recently arrived in Connecticut from England seeking religious freedom. In 1640 the community was known as Cupheag Plantation. By April 13, 1643, the growing town was known as Stratford, in honor of Stratford-upon-Avon in England.)
Robert first appeared in the town records with an entry for lot number 74 at Stratford, Connecticut dated 16 September 1648. He was still there in 1656 when he witnessed the distribution of Humphrey Spinner's estate in which it was declared that his son was about to marry Humphrey's daughter Mary.
Prior to 1657, they lived in Norwich, Connecticut for a time.
By 1657 the family had removed to New London, Connecticut where he lived in good repute and was one of the 16 original members of the New London Church. The town granted him the original Post lot, on Post Hill. He no doubt plied his trade as a shoemaker and also served as constable in 1660, and in 1661 was representative for New London, one of the townsmen in 1663.
In 1663 the town granted him two lots upon which to settle his two sons, Samuel and Isaac. According to New London tax records, in 1664, he was the 10th wealthiest man in the jurisdiction.
He was appointed to keep an ordinary in 1667, and the same year "freed from training," probably on account of age. He was again townsman in 1668 and a member of the general assembly in 1669.
His daughter, Ruth married, 15 Dec. 1669, John Lothrop; and Sarah married, John Calkins. His eldest son, Jonathan, was one of the first proprietors of Norwich, Connecticut and his four younger sons, Nehemiah, Samuel, Isaac and Nathaniel, settled at Wallingford, after their marriages in New London. John and Ruth Lothrop also lived in Wallingford.
Robert Royce died in New London, Connecticut before 22 Sep 1676 when his unsigned will was probated. There were five sons and three daughters, unnamed, who shared in the distribution of his estate. He also left a Legacy to the Norwich Church in his will.
His widow, Mary, continued to live on Post Hill until 1688, when she agreed to sell the property. She died, 4 Jul 1697, in Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut. Her son, Samuel, was granted administration of her estate 14 July 1697 at Wallingford.
