John Calkins (Caulkins) was born about 1634 in Cheshire, England, a son of Hugh Calkins of Waverton, Cheshire, England and later of the former parish of Saint Oswald Queen Street in Chester, Cheshire, England (now defunct).

John Calkins emigrated with his father to Marshfield, Plymouth Colony (Massachusetts) in 1640. By 1642, the family was in Gloucester, Massachusetts ... and by 1652 they had settled at Pequot Plantation, Connecticut Colony (present-day New London).

John Calkins was an original proprietor of Norwich in 1659 and his lot appears on the 1660 town map.

In 1669, John Calkins was on the list of freemen at Norwich. He was one of the town's selectmen in 1671, a constable of Norwich in 1679 and on the jury of the county court as late as 1691.

John Calkins married Sarah Royce.

NOTE: John Calkins is reportedly buried at Old Norwichtown Cemetery where he has a modern grave marker. The original grave marker has been lost. The monument bearing his name at Founders' Cemetery (Post Gager Burial Ground) is a cenotaph.

Actual burial here

The founders' monument was erected in 1871 from funds raised at the town bicentennial in 1859. It bears the names of the original proprietors of Norwich (1659). Also listed on this cenotaph is the name of the father of John Calkins, Hugh Calkins. Last Changed: August 16, 2021 Jerry Bevan Wright
