(2) Biographical data about this William Buell: View excerpts from article by respected genealogical researcher, George W. McCracken: "William Buell & Early Descendants," Pages 64 - 71 (The American Genealogist, Vol. 54, No. 2, April, 1978). which includes corrections of errors in the book "!The Buell Family in England and in America," by Albert Welles: WILLIAM BUELL, a joiner, came to America accompanied by a woman whose death on 3 Dec 1639 in Windsor, Conn. was recorded by the town clerk as that of "Goode Buell." She has generally been assumed to have been the mother of William, but she could have been his first wife.
The word "Goode" is merely an appellative designed to show that she was not of gentle birth McCracken discusses how Albert Welles attempted to identify her as Catherine, daughter of Sir John Goode and widow of Sir Robert Beville of Chesterton [Huntingdonshirfe]. "I think it so improbable that William Buell, a joiner, could have been an unrecorded son of such a pair ..... there does seem to be a son William in a Visitation pedigree, but when the same person was baptized in 1606 his name was entered as Richardus."
Although many of the founding settlers of Windsor, Conn. came from Dorchester, Massachusetts Bay Colony, nothing can be found about the Buell family before their arrival in Windsor.
William Buell married, perhaps at Windsor where the marriage is recorded, 18 Nov 1640, a woman whose name is not identified in this record. We know from other sources that her first name was Mary, but we have not found her maiden surname. Although there is a claim that it was either a Thomas or a Post, no evidence for these names or any other possible name has been discovered.
On 1 Dec 1640, William Buell was granted a five-acre home lot at Windsor, bounded south by William Thrall. About this same year, William Buell and William Filley bought of William Thrall two tracts, of eight and 36 acres, respectively.
On 29 March 1652, William Buell was paid for work done on the seats in the Windsor meeting house. Subsequently he completed other assignments for improvements to that building..
In June 1676, at the time of King Philip's War, William Buell contributed for the war sufferers.
In anticipation of death, William Buell conveyed , on 31 Oct 1681, the Thrall lands to his son Samuel, but Samuel was not to sell during the lifetime of his mother. According to the Windsor Vital Records, William died on 23 Nov 1681 at night, but the inventory of his estate his death was on 16 Nov 1681. Frank Farnworth Starr preferred to accept the latter date. His will was dated 26 July 1681. [See data below for a copy of the will and of the inventory.]
According to the inventory of her estate, the widow Mary Buell died on 1 Sept 1684, but the Windsor Vital Records say that she died on the day following. She left an unsigned will dated 29 Aug 1684, probated 24 March 1684/5.
