"Henry Chester, Merchant and Bailiff Of Bristol 1410 - 1470
Life Sketch
Henry Chester, merchant of Bristol, was a already a widower and one of the bailiffs of Bristol in 1456 when Queen Margaret of Anjou visited Bristol in royal state, and was entertained by the corporation. The Mayor of that year was William Canning, munificent founder of St. Mary Radcliffe's Church and hero of the Rowley Poems. Long before this Henry had already been married but his wife past away in 1450, leaving him behind one daughter named Joan, who grew up and married a man and had a daughter named Margaret. Skipping ahead fourteen years later and Henry was now the sheriff of the city in January 1470, and apparently served for one year as he died in this year on February 14th, 1470.
It is gravely asserted in the baronetages that Henry was one of the sons of Robert Chester of Stow in Cotswold, the ancestor of the Chesters of Chicheley, but this tradition was unknown to the elder heralds, and is not supported by a particle evidence. Henry's descendance never pretended any claims to the family coat of arms which were granted to them in 1467 to Robert Chesters' son William Chester of London, and the numerous wills of the fifteenth and sixteenth century show no trace of any connection or even acquaintance between the two families. It is certain therefore that if the Chesters of Stow St. Edward and Bristol really sprung from a common ancestor, he mist be looked for at a much earlier period than the reign of King Henry VI. A still more improbable story is told in "Rudders History Of Gloucestershire", where it is alleged that Henry's grandson William Chester, the father of the purchaser of Almundsbury, was a cadet of the Chesters of Royston and had been a Master of the Horse to the unfortunate Duke Of Buckingham who was beheaded in 1522, but Williams Parentage and career are ascertained beyond all doubt, and his connection with Sir Robert Chester of Royston is disproved by the silence of the family wills and the difference of their coat of arms.
Henry Chester died on February 14th, 1470-71, and was buried near his pew before the great crucifix in the nave of All Saints Church in Bristol. His social standing amongst the leading merchants of his time, is sufficiently proved by the witnesses who attested his will.
Several decades before his death, Henry was already married to a woman who passed away in 1450, leaving him one child named Joan, who also later married in 1485 with a daughter named Margaret.
