"THE CULLENS
From Upton, Nottinghamshire, Englad, c 1575 to Maungaturoto, New Zealand 1993
Researched and written by Cliff Cullen

First generation

Prior to the Norman Conquest of England, Nottingham was known as Smottingham. Two authorities on surnames say the name CULLEN derives from Cologne. In about 1200AD metal warkers from Europe settled in England to manufacture memorial plates for Cathedrals and churches. ...

Richard Cullen, husbandman, of Upton, with his will dated 11 February 1580, is the earliest Cullen record we have. He requested that he be buried at Upton, next to his first wife. Her name is unknown. Agnes, his second wife, was left his farm for 14 years while she brought up his children. To his daughters Margerie and Jennett Cullen he left a house that was 'leased to Forrest', to his son William a house that was 'leased to Lyltewood's wife', daughter Katherine Cullen was to have 'two sheep and a quarter of corne". Another daughter, Margaret was to receive a quie (a heifer) or gine. Margerie Cullen died at Upton 25 May 1592. A Katherine Cullen, believed to be the one mentioned in this will, died 15 June 1610 of the plague 'in ye cabine in ye fields die Veneries (Friday) and was buried ye night of 15 June." She had been a servant to Mr Owen Oglethorpe (gent!)."
