Orv was born September 14, 1927 at Chancellor, SD to Hermine (Weeldreyer) and George Otten. He became a born-again Christian as a boy. On August 21, 1949, he married Edna Anderson, whom he had led to faith in Christ a short time before. He sang in the Centralaires Quartet and did solo work at Central Baptist Church in Sioux Falls for over 20 years. He also taught Sunday School there for some years.

Orv was a general agent for Midland National Life Insurance Company and also American National Insurance mainly and made the Million Dollar Round Table and National Quality Award several times. They had a cabin on Big Stone Lake, where they, as a family, enjoyed fishing, water skiing, swimming, snowmobiling and winter sports. He always said he enjoyed hunting, fishing and going to church, not necessarily in that order. They moved to Rapid City last year after he retired.
