Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 18 at First Reformed Church in Sioux Falls for Bertha Riekena who died Sept. 15, 2007.

Bertha Schulte was born Oct. 19, 1904 one mile west of Monroe, South Dakota to Flora and George Schulte. She grew up on a farm southeast of Monroe. She attended grade school in Monroe.

On Mar. 26, 1929 she was united in marriage to Ted (Theodore) Riekena at the First Reformed Church parsonage near Rock Rapids, Iowa by Reverend Licht.

Bertha was a telephone operator from 1946 to 1948 in Monroe. While living in Sioux Falls, South Dakota she did a lot of fancy work making clothes, scarfs, pillows, and many other items. She'd take them to the Sioux Falls fair and won many blue ribbons. She also sewed many dresses, coats, etc.

Bertha and Ted moved to Sioux Falls in 1957 and lived in their home till 1993. She then moved to Hilda's Heritage in Lennox until August 2007 when she entered the Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

She was a member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Falls and was active in Circle and Senior Fellowship.

Survivors include: one daughter, Lavonne and son-in-law Laurence Viet of Chancellor, South Dakota; three grandchildren Deborah, Barbara, and David; six great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, two great-great step-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband on March 14, 1990, her parents, two sisters, four brothers, one niece and one nephew.
