Gertrude Hirning, 79, of Lodi, died on Feb. 14 at her home following an extended illness. She was born Gertrude Hoff on Feb.22,1919, in Eureka, S.D. and was raised in Wishek, N.D., where she graduated from high school.

She later taught elementary school in Wishek.

She married Clarence Hirning on Sept 1, 1940, in Marion, N.D., and they moved to California in 1942 and lived in San Francisco until moving to Lodi in 1945.

Mrs. Hirning was a homemaker and was a longtime member of Zion Reformed Church where she was active in the choir and also taught Sunday School.

She was active in scouting when her children were younger and served as a den mother. She was named an honorary life member of the P.T.A. at Needham School and was involved with the first "Mothers March on Polio" immunization drive in 1955.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Hirning in 1996; a son, Ray Hirning in 1996; brothers, Bill and Reuben Hoff; and sisters, Ida Lehr and Eleen Reilly.

She is survived by a son; sisters, Ella Eckman, Freida Robinson, Violet Dailey and LaVon Keszler; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
