Henry Gruis Is Buried Monday

Heart Ailment Causes Death of Former R. R. Resident
Funeral services for Henry Gruis, 80, for many years a resident of this county, were held in Rock Rapids on Monday of this week. Rev. J. De Jongh, pastor of the Reformed church of this city, assisted by Rev. E. Niebrugge of the Presbyterian church of George, were in charge of the services, at the Gruis home on East Main street, and later at the Reformed church. Interment was made in Riverview cemetery.

The sermons of Rev. De Jongh and Rev. Niebrugge were based on Psalms 42:11, John 14:1-3 and on Psalms 42:0.
Henry Gruis was born on June 12, 1856 in Nieuw Beerta, Groningen, Netherlands. He died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. F. Stubbe, 7 miles southeast of George, on Friday, April 10.

On June 4, 1881 he married Anke Popkes at Nieuw Beerta, and in 1893 they came to America, locating first at Freeport, III., where the family resided until 1910. Then the family came to Lyon county, locating on a farm 5 miles northeast of Rock Rapids. In 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Gruis retired from the farm and moved to this city to make their home.

Mr. and Mrs. Gruis were the parents of 8 children, and these children had the privilege of assisting their parents in celebrating their golden wedding anniversary, without a single death having occurred in the immediate family circle. However in 1932 and 1933, four members of the family were taken by death, Mrs. Gruis dying on April 5, 1933.

The children who survive are Tobe of Pipestone, Minn., Louis of Freeport, Ill., Haiko of George, Grace, Mrs. J. F. Stubbe of George, Henry of Plpestone and Daniel of Rock Rapids.

Mr. Gruis was always very active, and it was not until 1935 that he suffered a serious illness, due to heart trouble. Early this year he suffered a recurrence of that disease, which caused his death.

While in Illinois Mr. Gruis attended the Baileyville Reformed church. During his residence in Iowa he attended the Presbyterian Church until 1922, when he united with the Reformed church in this city.

In addition to his children, Mr. Gruis is survived by 23 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren one brother. Daniel, still living in the Netherlands and one sister Mrs. Haiko Poel of Trent, S. D.
