KORTHALS, GERRIT - IDA DeWEERD

An active farm family that lived around George was the Gerrit and Ida DeWeerd Korthals family. In fact, all of the sons became farmers and the daughters married farmers. The families all still live in the George area. Son, Alfred, said he often wondered how his folks did everything, because they had 11 children, a grandfather that often stayed with them, and usually a hired man. Daughter, Leona (Mrs. James Geerdes), talked about the farm life as she remembered it and it appears in the chapter on Everyday Life. The family had lots of fun and no one seemed to feel things were too hectic or too crowded. Everyone had chores to do and they were done.

The picture shows family members as follows the front row, left to right: Albert (Johanna Ohling), Jeanette (Raymond Lamfers and they are both deceased), father Gerrit, Ronald (Floy Hengelfeld), mother Ida, Henrietta (Alvin Krull and he is deceased) and Edith (Emery Van Tilburg and he is deceased). Top row: Harold (Ardis Eberline), Alfred"

One thing the family remembers was the fact that their father was a winner of corn picking contests. This was very difficult work and was done by hand for many years. Corn picking season lasted far longer than it does today. It took a lot of bushels to fill a wagon."
