All known (to me) records give his name as John Albert Cordes. It is likely, however, that his baptismal name was Albert Cordes---derived from this step-father Albert Snap (His biological father, Lambert Cordes died when he was 2 years old.) and then became John after his father Jan Eukes "John" Cordes died when he was only 1 month old. On Jan Eukes probate records his surviving wife Bena Amelsberg Cordes lists her children as Mary Cordes, Ida Cordes and Albert Cordes. I have never before seen my grandfather's name listed as "Johann." I have not been able to find his birth or baptismal records in Stephenson County, Illinois. Local church (Sabin) records for that era have long been lost and no official birth record can be found in Freeport offices. provided by john a. cordes
