A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lebanon September 1, 1862, and mustered into federal service on a date unreported as 2nd lieutenant of Co. E, 17th
Pennsylvania Cavalry (162nd Pa). He was then promoted to 1st lieutenant October 22, 1862, and to captain of Co. I on February 13, 1865. Wounded at the battle of Five Forks, Virginia, April 1, 1865, he was hospitalized and discharged by surgeon's certificate per general order to date June 20, 1865.
