Obituary for Leona June Buffington

Leona June Buffington, 84, of Mason City, IA died on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A visitation will be held from 4-8 pm on Friday, April 27, 2018 at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 2nd St SE, Mason City. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am with a one hour prior visitation on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S Pennsylvania Ave, Mason City, with Pastor Steve Hansen officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Leona June Buffington was born on June 22, 1933 in Crystal Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Emma (Frederickson) Rasmussen. She attended country schools and graduated from Forest City High School. She worked in the Treasurer's office at the Winnebago County Courthouse following graduation.

On August 25, 1956, she was united in marriage to Lee Buffington in Forest City. Leona was a stay-at-home mother for many years, and later worked for Payless Cashways and Sears for many years doing bookkeeping and clerical work.

She enjoyed attending her grandchildren's many events and never missed the opportunity to be a part of their lives. Leona enjoyed traveling with Lee and the family; taking trips to all parts of the country and continued traveling in later years. She enjoyed attending community events with her many close friends. Leona had a passion for her flowers and garden; she spent many enjoyable hours outside.

Leona's pets were a big part of her life, including: Brutus, Brownie, and Bitsy. She was a regular fixture seen walking her dogs through her neighborhood. Leona was a frequent pet-sitter for family and friends. Her sons' Boy Scouting life was very important to her, and she served as a Den Mother, and was very proud of her Eagle Scout son's and her Eagle Scout grandson's. She was close to her family and enjoyed spending time with her brother, sisters, many nieces and nephews, and the rest of her family.

Leona was deeply devoted to Wesley United Methodist Church, serving in many groups in leadership roles, church circle, women's club, leading the Golden Age group, and volunteering in the church office. She also volunteered for: Seniors & Law Enforcement Together (SALT), Kinney Pioneer Museum, Meals on Wheels and Hospice.

Those left to cherish her memory include Children: Mark (Teresa) Buffington of Mason City; Kevin (Kim) Buffington of Sioux Falls, SD and Perry (Marla) Buffington of Mason City; Grandchildren: Chad (Katie) Buffington, Jason Buffington, Matt (Lauren) Buffington, Chris Buffington, Heather (Andrew) Boelman, Justin (Alicia) Anderson, Heather Anderson, Joe (Reka) Buffington, Adam Buffington, Ben Buffington and Rebecca Buffington; Great-Grandchildren: Leila Buffington, Austin Buffington, Morgan Buffington, Hailey Buffington, Elizabeth Boelman, Remington Boelman, Colton Boelman, Ashtyn Smith and Presley Smith; Siblings: James Rasmussen, Verna (Jack) Ouverson and many beloved brothers-in law and sisters-in-law; Beloved Granddogs: Brittney, Chumlee, Lewee, Buddy and Chloe.

Leona was preceded in death by: Husband, Lee Buffington; Grandson, Blake Boelman; Parents, Albert and Emma Rasmussen; Sister and Brother-In-Law, Wilma (John) Riekena; Sister-In-Law, Winifred Rasmussen; Many beloved brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and family
