"Joe De Neui - - The De Neuis trace their family back to a common ancestor who was Napoleon's great field marshall in France, Marshall Ney. With the defeat of Napoleon's French forces the family fled to Germany, and eventually, to changethe French sound of their name. they became De Neui. Another spelling of the name was Neu.

Long after the family had settled in Germany, Joe was born, in 1861. Kate Kruse, who was later to become his wife was also born in Germany, in 1868. Both families immigrated to America and settled in Grundy County. There Joe and Katewere married in 1890 and very shortly came to Lyon County. Joe's brother, John P., had come here previously and was already living in the very small town of George.

The Joe De Neuis settled on a farm three miles east and one mile north of George. When they moved to this prairie land, they missed the trees they had been used to, so they planted many new trees. Soon they had a three-acre grove ofyoung trees and a row of trees down the center of the farm for a shelter belt. The children grew up loving trees as their father had. George, the oldest son, never lost this interest and has been in the nursery business here for overfifty years.

Children in the Joe De Neui family were Anna (married to Henry Mulder); George (married to Minnie Ackerman); Pete (married to Lily Martens; John (married more than once, Edna Schoonhoven, and Jenny Peters); and Rev. Henry (married toFlorence Lansma)."

Mr. Knock avirs Kate is born in Forreston, IL whilst the author of the Joe De Neui article avirs she was born in Germany. - D.A. Navorska - ii Dec MMXI - Irving, TX
