Richard was the son of Richard and Huldah (Pancoast) Raker.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. A life member of the Sherwood VFW, a charter member of the Sherwood Lions Clum, a member of the Defiance Moose Lodge, Sherwood Village Council presiden, and a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, rural Defiance, where he served as part of the Christ Renews His Parish Men's Team and lay minister. He retired from Schuller Manville in 1992, after 25 years as a quality control technician.
