"Berend Geerdes - - came from Germany with his mother and a sister. His father had lost his life in military service in Germany. The sister later became Mrs. Chris De Groot, Sr. Berend Geerdes and Minnie Hidden were married inIllinois. In 1886 they came to the George area to farm southeast of George on the farm seven and a half miles from George where Leonard Nieuwendorp now lives. In 1891 they moved to the farm nearer George where Inez Gronewold now lives.Children in the family were Chris (married Tillie Roben); George (married twice, Grace Eilders and Emma Heikens); Remt (married Mary Willemssen); Herman (married Tena Uhe); Hanna (Mrs. Ben Blau); and Bertha (Mrs Eildert Eilders). Twosons and two daughters of this family died as young men and women of tuberculosis."
