"Gary Pringle
July 9, 1932 - July 14, 2016
Gary Pringle passed away peacefully at home with his family Thursday afternoon, July 14, 2013.
Gary is survived by son Michael; daughter Debra, her husband Dennis; grandsons Anthony, Nicholas, and Alexander; along with daughter in-law Mina. He is also survived by one brother, Larry Pringle and wife, Carolyn, who reside in Garden Grove Calif.; and his beloved niece, Loni and husband Lowell Luft, who reside in Rolfe. [Iowa]
His wife Kathleen preceded him in death in 2014.
Gary was born in Plover to Clarence and June Pringle with four siblings.
In his full life of 84 years, some of the distinct chapters include living on the farm outside Plover, off to CNW railroad school as telegrapher/depot agent, drafted for two years by Army, and University of Iowa Pharmacy School.
The most important chapter; however, was when he met love of his life Kathleen, a waitress, and one room school house teacher, from Burt. [Iowa] They were married for 60 years.
There were fond memories of riding his bike to Pocahontas on Saturday to go swimming, and always industrious, for summer jobs, took his younger brother, Larry, to the Plover meat locker to trade him for some hot dogs.
He graduated high school at 16, spent the next three years with the railroad and the following two years with Uncle Sam. Gary went onto to pharmacy school 1955-1959, he was class president for all four years, and Michael and Debra were born along the way.
Another key part of his life was 45 years of pharmacy work with Eli Lilly pharmaceutical company in Iowa and Illinois and HY-VEE pharmacy in Davenport [, Iowa]. On his off time, he enjoyed family vacations to our national parks -- many with the Dixon family -- and going fishing in Minnesota and Canada, including Uncle Jim's place in Montana off an Indian reservation. In later years he enjoyed attending his grandson, Anthony's, band concerts and soccer matches for grandsons Nick and Alex.
A later chapter of his life had a move to Texas in 2004 to be close to daughter Debra's family, with husband Dennis and sons: Nick, wife Mina; Alex and granddog Charlie in the Woodlands. Gary often watched over the King Charles Cavalier while Debra and Dennis were traveling, and he and Charlie were just 70 years apart in age, both with birthdays in July.
Active in his 55+ patio home community, and neighborhood watch coordinator for the block, and all-around fix-it guy, repairing neighborhood fences in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike back in 2008.
Gary recruited Dennis to his local poker card playing group meeting the first Friday of every month. On many Saturdays, he and Dennis had a home project list to tackle, with his enormous tool set and power equipment he had accumulated in his life time.
In recent years he made a few memorable trips to Las Vegas, Laughlin, and southern California to visit with his brother's family and much enjoyed the gaming and entertainment venues.
Fishing continued to be a big deal for him, where he found the Gulf of Mexico fishing a bit different than northern Minnesota catches he was used to. Gary also became active in the local environmental group, The Woodlands GREEN (TWG), for the next decade, often helping recycle on Earth Day, serving on an education booth on conservation, or building display cases for special events.
In 2014, Kathleen was honored by TWG with a scholarship in her name that Gary initiated in remembrance of her years of teaching.
After 6 months of symptoms, major weight loss, and very difficult to diagnose rare cells, Gary became an outpatient to University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in February 2016, who confirmed a diagnosis of Mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a very rare cancer, that can be dormant in the body for decades. I is asbestos related, with a poor prognosis of 3-6 months. He remained independent living by himself until July 1 when his conditions worsened, and hospice home care was started.
The last two weeks of his life, he celebrated his 84th birthday at home, surrounded by family, neighbors, and caregivers. Anyone interested in making a memorial donation, the family suggests sending to two organizations that meant a lot to Gary and family:
The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, PO Box 4482 Houston Tx 77210. (Gary Pringle patient id 1255960)
The Woodlands GREEN, PO Box 9934 The Woodlands, TX 77387 in honor of Gary Pringle.
Services to be held at Lentz Funeral Home, Algona, [Iowa] on Saturday July 23. There will be a visitation at 1 p.m. and a service at 2 p.m., followed by a graveside service and then refreshments at the Burt Community Center.
Lentz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.lentzfuneralhome.com."
