BURT – A funeral service for Wilbur K. "Willie" Doege, was held Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church, Burt, with Reverend Robin Thomas officiating. Burial was in Burt Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, thefamily asks that donations be made to the Lewy Body Disease Association or the Door of Faith Mission in Des Moines, in his memory.

Wilbur Keith "Willie" Doege was born Aug. 9, 1927, at Titonka, to Lawrence and Irma (Tuttle) Doege. Willie attended school at Titonka and farmed with his father. He later enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served his countryand was honorably discharged. He then returned to Burt and owned and operated Willie's Billiards. On Jan. 30, 1955, Willie was joined in marriage to Gladys Groen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple continued to operate Willie's Billiards and the Snack Shop and Willie farmed part-time. He later worked full-time for KossuthCounty Maintenance and retired in 1989.

Willie enjoyed playing cards, watching his favorite baseball teams on television, camping, fishing and gardening. Willie was a jokester and enjoyed telling stories with his great sense of humor. He received a Good Neighbor Award in Burt.

Willie was admitted to the University Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Des Moines last November and died there on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at the age of 81.

Survivors include his wife Gladys of Ankeny; son: Jim Doege and wife, Chris, of Mason City; daughters: Kathy and husband, Ken Pilch, of Ankeny; Karla and husband, Shawn O'Toole, of Des Moines, and Kendra Doege of Denver, Colo., as well as 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Willie was preceded in death by his parents, two half-brothers, Earl and Vern Rafdal and half-sister Carol Adams and several nieces and nephews.
