Notes for MATILDE PETERMAN: Newspaper clipping:

Matilde Francois Laid to rest

The citizens of Anselmo and vicinity were greatly grieved when the news was circulated that "Aunt Tillie" Francois, as she was familiarly known, had passed away at her home west of Anselmo. As she had enjoyed good health and was well andcheerful when ast seen the evening before her death, it was a shock to all when the sad news was learned.

Matilde Francois posessed the true pioneer spirit., thrifty, progressive upright in every day living and honest in dealing with her fellow man. She gave generously her talents, sewing, caring for the sick or serving to promote educationand betterment of her community.

Matilde Francois was born to William and Catherine Peterman in the village of Vechmael, Belgium on Oct. 23, 1877 and died Oct. 25, 1957 , having attained her 80th birthday and two days.

She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Harry and daughters, Catherine and Jeanetter, a brother, Harry Peterman of Chicago, five grandchildren and four little great grandchildren, whom she cherished dearly.

In the year 1887 she and an older brother came to America to the home their father had established in Chicago. Here she attended school and became a professional dressmaker. On Aug. 13, 1902 she was united in marriage to Bert Francois, who was born in the same village she was.

They came on the homestead northeast of Broken Bow, where their four children were born. Because of the failing health of her husband they moved to Anselmo in 1913, where he was spared four more years. After she was left with the fullresponsibility of the family she carried on the operations of the ranch to provide a home and education for her children.

In the year 1949 she was again grieved by the untimely and tragic death of a son, Christian. As a baby she was baptised into the Catholic faith and lived a devoted life always. In the darkest hours of despair she sought and receivedconsolation from her faith. Funeral services were conducted by Father Wachterle in the St. Anselm's church and burial beside her husband in St. Anselm's cemetery. It can truly be said she was universally esteemed by those fortunate enoughto have her for a mother, grandmother, friend or neighbor, for to know her was to love her.
