Duane was born on May 24, 1934, in Grant County, the son of Frank and Mildred (Hall) Fredrichsen. He graduated from Big Stone High School in 1952. He served his country in the U. S. Army from September 7, 1955, until his honorable discharge on March 8, 1956. After his father suffered a heart attack Mr. Fredrichsen returned to operate the farm.

Following his marriage to Carol Anderson on February 15, 1959, he farmed north of Milbank until 1988 when the couple moved into Milbank. He was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Milbank.

Duane passed away from an apparent heart attack in St. Bernard's Providence Hospital.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary (Shelly) and Dan; six daughters, Kathy (John) Lange, Lynne (George) Van Sambeek, Kari, Cheryl (Brad) Stevens, Diane (Todd) Berndt and Staci; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Myrtle Groom; two aunts, Alma Fredrichsen and Pearl Smith, both of Milbank, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lorraine Chase.
