After his fathers death in 1850, he and his mother moved to Montreal. In 1854 he came toMonroe, Michigan. He fought on the Union side in the Civil War. He enlisted into the Ohio, USA 14th Volunteer Infantry Regiment of the 3rd division of the Ohio, USA Infantry under General J.M. Brannon, Company H. Louis took a 58 caliberminny ball in the right leg at the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia. He crawled under a small bridge at Chickamuga Creek He lay there with a plug of tobacco in the wound for 24 hours.
