Note: Dr. Ulmer attended the Medico-Chiurgical College of Philadelphia and completed his medical training in 1913. The Medico-Chiurgical College of Philadelphia was organized in 1881 and became the Graduate school of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in 1916.

Doc, as he was affectionately known, established his practice in the small town of Gibbstown, New Jersey, pop. 213, in 1918. From 1918 on, he was a member and fellow of the American medical Association.
