'Mr. Charles V. Merrill and family came from the state of Maine in 1837 and settled on the S1/2 of the NE1/4 of Section 4 Town 10 South Range 4 East where he continued to reside until his death in 1846. He was a minister of the ChristianChurch, being very zealous. He would hold meetings at the different cabins of the early settlers and log school houses of those days in this and the surrounding township, continuing his ministerial labors until his last sickness. Hiswidow is still living on the same place where he first located on his arrival here. There are now but three children living (although there were 12 children born to them). Cyrena was married to Mr. David Salsbury in 1843 and resides inPike Township this county until the past three years when she has been caring for her invalid mother in Fulton Township. ...' <>
