The son of Jonathan & Mary Ann (Culbertson) Koser [sic], in 1860 he was a farmer living in Mifflin Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Chambersburg August 15, 1861, and mustered into federal service at Pittsburgh October 11 as a private with what became known as Independent Battery B, Pennsylvania Light Artillery. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer December 20, 1863, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and honorably discharged with his company October 12, 1865, at Victoria, Texas.

He married Elizabeth Hafer June 11, 1870, in Morincie, Lawrence County, Michigan, and fathered Henry Albert (b. 03/06/72, d. 09/08/72), Minnie Ellen (b. 11/28/73), William L. (B. 05/14/75 - Sp/Am War), Rosa May (b. 05/13/77), Robert A. (b. 02/22/79, d. 10/07/80), and Charles A. (b. 03/30/82). By no later than 1915, he lived in Bryan, Williams County, Ohio.

Some of his family spell their last name "Koser," others "Kosier." Samuel chose the latter.
