Shimizu, Anela, e-mail to David A. Navorska, (Honolulu HI, A.S.S., v Jan MM)

Mrs. Shimizu writes, 'Buford (my grandfather) B. 7/23/1893 D. 6/30/1979 Said he was born in Chicago, ILL (I found no record of that and can't imagine how he would have been born in ILL when it looks like his parents never left OH)

Clamed to not have a birth certificate because it was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire (which happened before he was born - but of course when I was younger I never bothered to verify tht story)

Married a Margaret OSTERMANN (no information known - except a small photo that I have) and had one son, Frederick Ostermann GIER (again, no information except for a picture of him when he was about 2 yrs) My search for him actuallystarted me on all this genealogy stuff.

Buford joined the Service (Navy I think under the alias of Burton E. Grimes - Evidently he go divorced and didn't want to pay alimony or child support (what a guy). His travels in the military brought him to Hawaii where he met andmarried a native girl, Josephine KAEKA. He did marry my grandmother with his birth name, Buford GIER - However, in all other walks of life he was known as Burton Grimes.

Together, Buford & Josephine had 12 children, 2 of which died at birth, 1, Julian GIER died in Vietnam, and 1 Josephine, died of a stroke. My mother Gertrude Alwood Laie GIER is their oldest child.'
