Julia "Judy" G. (Glatfelter) Alwood, 91, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, April 5, 2018, at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late George D. Alwood. Born Feb. 15, 1927, in East Berlin, Judy was the youngest daughter of the late Ursinus L. and Alice A. (Harman) Glatfelter. She was vice president of her class at East Berlin High School. She went on to graduate from cosmetology school and became owner and operator of Judy's Beauty Shop. She also worked administratively for Yorktowne Kitchens from 1970 until her retirement in 1989. Judy and George owned Alwood's Music House and Alwood Apartments. Mrs. Alwood was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Red Lion. She was also a member of the Jewish Community Center, the Red Lion Fire Company Auxiliary, and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Judy enjoyed playing cards and swimming, even receiving an award for swimming more than 50 miles. Judy will leave a legacy of love for all who knew her and were touched by her loving spirit, for in her own words, "I look at the heart of the person, nothing else matters." Mrs. Alwood leaves her loving family of two daughters, Jane L. Alwood of Hanover and Carol D. Clark and her husband, Tom, of Red Lion; three grandchildren, Amanda Julia Handy and her husband, Robert, of Red Lion, Crystal Jane Clark of Philadelphia, and Adam Thomas Clark and his wife, Samantha, of Elkins Park; four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Tommy, Calvin and Margot; and Sandy Lawrence, who was like a daughter to Judy. In addition to her husband and parents, Judy was preceded in death by her paternal aunt and uncle who raised her, Esther G. and Peter W. Kimmel; and four siblings, George R. Glatfelter, Rosella Altland, Casper L. Glatfelter, and Victor A. Glatfelter.
