'... twenty second day of October A.D. 1889 .... Gratiot County ... Michigan ... William H. Pratt a resident of the township of Sumner Gratiot County ... Michican ... I am personally acquainted with Francis R. Hickman late private Co. D.26th Regt. Michigan Inft. Vols. who was discharged at Suffolk Va. on the 8th day of June A.D. 1863 by order of Brigadier Gen. Terry Commanding Brigade. Further that I assisted the said Francis R. Hickman to the cars he being too weak andfeeble to help himself. It was claimed at the time that the said Hickman was discharged for consumption contracted while on duty at Alexandria Va. during the winter of 1862 & 1863.

Virginia he Hickman contracted a Severe cold from exposure in camp which Resulted in disease of Lungs that the date of his taking cold as above stated was in tehe month of January or February 1863 and thatfrom the time of his taking cold as above he was good for nothing as a Soldier and while at Suffolk Va in the ___ part of June 1863 we were on General Inspection General Terry Inspecting General called his Hickman out of the Ranks andordered him discharged Saying he Hickman had the consumption & was discharged from Said Co & Regiment in May 1864 and came home to Sumner Michigan and Saw the Said Hickman here and he was then Sick and remained sick until his death whichoccurred some time about the middle of September 1864 remember that I was also Sick so that I did not attend his Funeral. that I know the above facts from Seeing working winth and being with him the Said Hickman as above Stated My Postoffice address is Elm Hall Michigan.
