"Former Buffalo Center Man Met Death On Highway

Herman Balvance Was Highway North of Bancroft Wien Struck By Car

Herman. Balvance, 59 who resided on a farm southwest of here for many years, was fatailly Injured when struck br a car as He walked along hlghway 169 about a half-mile nortih of Bancroft early Sunday morning.

The driver of tine car was Richard Henrickson, Humboldt. With him was Jack Laing of Hlumboldt, who was asleep in ithe rear seat of the cair at the time of the accident. Hendrickson told officers he did not see Balvance until the Ledyaxdfarmer was three or four feet from the car, that his vision was(hindered by falling snow.

Balvance, who resided 3 miles west of Ledyard, had taken a companion whom he spent the evening, home to Bancroft. Returning, his car was driven Into a ditch just north of Bancroft. Apparenitly starting out for home on foot, the farmer was struck by the Hendrickson car at 5:15 a. m. a mile north of Bancroft.

The Ledyard farmer suffered two broken legs and his left side pushed in. The Humiboldt men took him to the Edgar Welip oil station at Bancroft but the farmer died before medical assistance could be given him.

Hendrickson told officers that he was driving at a speed of about 25 miles an hour when he struck Balvance. Tlhe farmer, he said, was walking ailing tlhe edge of the highway.

The body was brought to H. J. Schutter & Son funeral parlors.

Funeral services was held at the farm home 3 miles west of Ledyard on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock and burial was made at the cemetery at Eldora, Iowa.

Surviving the farmer are his widow, three daughters and two sons."
