Hun vader, Beert Schipper, moet gedwongen zijn Tjalk verkopen. De schoonvader van Wilhelmina Schipper: Aalt Bruining komt dan tussenbeide. Hij koopt de tjalk en leent hem weer uit aan Beert Schipper en zijn zoon Hendrik. Hierdoor kunnen zij blijven varen en voor inkomen zorgen. Aalt Bruining moet hiervoor een hypotheek op zijn huis nemen.
