In de opvolging strijd van Gelre zette hij in 1465 zijn vader gevangen en werd zelf Hertog. In 1468 won hij de slag van Straelen tegen Kleef, maar Karel de Stoute herstelde vader Arnold in zijn gezag en Adolf werd gevangen genomen in Hesdin. Als toegeving, levert Arnold van Gelre zijn gebieden over aan de Bourgondiërs. Hij krijgt voor deze overdracht 300.000 goud guldens en maakt Karel de Stoute tot zijn erfgenaam. Na de dood van Karel de Stoute in 1477 werd Adolf bevrijd te Gent door de Vlamingen. Hij werd in 1477 opgevolgd door regentes Katharina van Gelre, zijn zuster.

Hij werd bijgezet in de St. Lodewijk kapel, die in 1299 door bisschop Jean e Vasonne was opgericht ter nagedachtenis aan de Franse koning Lodewijk de Heilige. De Bisschop was in 1300 zelf in de kapel begraven. De grafmonumen ten van de Vasonne en Adolf van Egmont werden in 1566 vernield tijdens de beeldenstorm, maar konden toen nog worden opgeknapt.
