In a letter written to Harry Doner, dated November 20, 1978, KennethGibbon writes:
(in part)
"...William Coxan and Mary Catherine Schell were my great - greatgrandparents and a lively couple they were. Will was downright lazy andMary Catherine, or Granny Mc as we call her, was ambitious. Will liked thebottle and Granny Mc loathed drinking. Will needed his freedom and sherequired roots. Those vows that took place 7 March 1822 at Richmond HillPresbyterian Church, Markham, never stood a chance."
and more:
"...William Coxan died April of 1850 at Lockport, Niagra County, NewYork, the victim of a drunken brawl. He lay in a comatose state in thepoor house at Lockport until toward the end of his life. At death he wasburied in Potter's Field behind the poor house.
Granny Mc died March 25 1890 in Sugarcreek Twp., Vanango Co.,Pennsylvsania. She was living at the time with my great-grandfather butwhen events there didn't suit her, she would stomp up hill and down dellto Aunt Betsy's (Elizabeth Ann).
That March turned quite warm when Granny did her last stomp. Arriving atBetsy's, the feisty old lady was given a glass of cold buttermilk whichshe downed like a drunkard. Betwixt the heat and the buttermilk, GrannyMc soon took to her bed and died soon thereafter.
The tale isn't quite over. On the way to the cemetery the hearse waspulling up a long hill when Granny Mc and her coffin rolled off andtumbled over and over in the brambles. The good old soul had run awayagain..."
