Adam was 13 years old when he fathered Mary Jane. Nancy was 9 years older than Adam. They wed when Adam was 16. Adam is on the 1810 Wilkes Co., Census, listed with a Loom in his household and paid tax on 200 yards of material. Adam lived on the Dan River. Most all tax payers on Dan River had looms. He and Nancy and children migrated to Floyd Co., Ky in 1817 along with Nancy's brothers and families. Adam was alive living with son, Adam in 1880, in Owsley Co., KY. He gave his age as 88. From the research notes of Bella Gulden; presented on March 19, 2015 Cast of Families: PLEASE REFER TO THE PERSON'S TIMELINE AND SOURCE INFORMATION AS EVIDENCE FOR THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION Adam Birchfield b abt 1792-1883 Adam's 1st wife: Nancy Caroline Taulbee b abt 1784-1852 Adam's 2nd wife: Cameliza (Eliza) Osborn b abt 1812-1859 Adam's 3rd wife: Susanah Shockey b abt 1804-1880 (1st to Andrew Burton, 2nd to Andrew Miller) Matilda Birchfield: Daughter of Adam Birchfield and Nancy Caroline Taulbee Birchfield b abt 1822-1900. Nancy Wages b abt 1849-1949 (this is not a typo--Nancy is reported to have lived 100 yrs). Nancy's mother, Nancy Burton Wages dies as a result of child birth in 1855. Little Nancy is found living with her Aunt Hannah and Uncle James in the 1860 and 1870 census reports. (Nancy and Hannah are sister). How little Nancy came to live with her aunt and uncle is not known. Her father, Benjamin's circumstance at the time of his wife's death is not known to me at this time. Numerous member trees show Benjamin established a life for himself with a second family that did not include little Nancy or a known older sister, Elizabeth. I have not confirmed the information provided by member trees to support their claims to be accurate. Little Nancy Wages marries Adam Hiram Birchfield abt 1871. Adam Hiram Birchfield is the son of Adam Birchfield and cameliza (Eliza) Osborn. As my research continues, I am confident there is much more to learn about the complexities of these families. RESEARCH NOTES OF BELLA GULDEN; PRESENTED MARCH 27, 2015

Circa 1865 must have been a time of great saddness as it appears a number of children were either orphaned or misplaced. My account of events begins with Allen and Matilda Birchfield Shockey and a number of their children who ban together to take care of their own.

Family Cast #1: Allen and Matilda Birchfield Shockey Family
Matilda Birchfield: Daughter of Adam Birchfield and Nancy Caroline Taulbee Birchfield b abt 1822-1900.
Allen Shockey: Allen is the illegitmate son of Susanah Shockey and William Gannon. Allen Shockey was born about 1816.
Allen and Matilda have 6 known children: 1) Emily Millie Shockey born 1846 (not to be confused with Emily Millie Birchfield); 2) Elias E born 1848; 3) Henry Clay born 1850; 4) Sarah born1856; 5) Paulina born 1857 and 6 ) James F 1864

Family Cast #2: John and Polly Whitaker Birchfield Family
John Birchfield born about 1815 is the son of Adam Birchfield and Nancy Taulbee. John and Matilda Birchfield Shockey are brother and sister. John 1st marries Polly Whitaker and they have 9 known children: Adam born 1837; Nancy born 1839; Samuel born 1842; William 1844; Eliza Louise 1845; James born 1848; Matilda 1851; Lucinda born 1854; Submira Rose 1856. John is married for a brief time to a 2nd wife before he dies. They appear to have had no children.
Family Cast #3: Wesley and Emily Millie Birchfield Sebastian Family
Emily Millie Birchfield born 1819 is the daughter of Adam Birchfield and Nancy Caroline Taulbee. Her brother is John Birchfield, family cast #2 and her sister is Matilda Birchfield Shockey born 1822, family cast #1. Wesley and Millie have 4 known children: 1) James M born 1838; 2) Matilda born 1842; 3) John Franklin born 1844 and 4) Jacob Wesley born 1847. Their daughter, Matilda Sebastian born 1842 marries Daniel Burton. See Cast Family #6 and #7 for additional detail.
Family Cast #4: Elias and Julia Ann McQuinn Shockey Family
Elias Shockey born 1848 is the son of Allen and Matilda Birchfield Shockey. Elias E and Emily Millie Shockey 1846 (not to be confused with Emily Millie Birchfield 1819) are brother and sister.
Family Cast # 5: Robert and Emily Millie Shockey Lindon (not to be confused with Emily Millie Birchfield born 1819:
Emily Millie Shockey born 1846 is the daughter of Allen and Matilda Birchfield Shockey.

Family Cast # 6: Andrew Burton and Susanah Shockey Burton:
As stated in Family Cast #1, Susananh Shockey is Allen Shockey's mother. When Susanah married for the first time it was to Andrew Burton. Andrew and Susanah had 11 known children. Thus, Susanana's son, Allen Shockey, had 11 half brother and sisters. Daniel Burton born about 1833, Hannah Burton born 1831 and Nancy born 1826 are 3 of their 11 known children.
Family Cast # 7: Daniel Burton and Matilda Sebastian Burton Family:
Daniel and Matilda Sebastian Burton marry and have 2 known children: 1) James born 1859 and 2) Eliza born 1865. Census records for 1870 has Daniel living with the John Burton family. In 1870 marital staus was not reported in 1870 census information gathering. In the 1880 census Daniel is reported as "divorced" and living with his brother, Andrew and his family. In 1900, Daniel is reported as "divorced" living with his daughter Eliza Sebastian Schull. Daniel and Matilda Sebastian Burton are found together in the 1860 census and living apart by 1870 census.
I have found no record of Matilda Sebastian Burton after the 1860 census. If she remarried, the identity of her husband has not been substantiated. If Matilda did marry a 2nd time why did she not take with her her young children? There is a "possibility" that Daniel and Matilda first divorced and Matilda died leaving Daniel with small children he could not or would not care for. This would explain why the children were placed in the care of other families.
