Notes about Samuel Talbee

SAMUEL TAULBEE (1706)

From the Maryland Hall of Records in Annapolis, MD Deed Bk TBD 217 thru

220 for Baltimore County.

Samuel Talbee leased land from Thomas Brerewood for farming. It was a total of 83 1/3 acres.

This located on "My Lady's Manor (Lord Baltimore Gift." Samuel was described as about 38

years of age, wife Elizabeth about 21 and son Zephaniah about 3.

My Lady's Manor was a tract of land of many thousands of acres that was given to Charlotte

Calvert, she the niece of Lord Baltimore, as a wedding gift when she married Thomas

Brerewood. Thomas was very poor business man and had to lease, sell and in some cases lost much of

the property. He was only able to hold on to it for a few years. This was mainly

between 1740 and 1755. Chancery Records of Baltimore Co., Vol 25, pg. 625−632, there is a

dispute over the land that was leased by Samuel Talbie. It would seem that Samuel had a

right to sell his lease, which he did, date not shown, but he left Maryland and went to NC.

We don't know just when he left Maryland. This record, that is part of it, was in year 1792

when Zephaniah said that his parents had gone to Carolina. Our first record of Samuel in NC

is 1783, but was there in 1776 with Wm. we are sure.

The Administration of Acc'ts, Baltimore co., MD, Mary Talby administrator of the estate of

Edward Talby, 1711

In Box 3, Folder 73, 1713, an Inventory for Mary Talby of Baltimore Co., find that WILLIAM

HITCHCOCK is the executor, he the father of Elizabeth who married Samuel, Taulbee, Talbee.

Terms of the lease of land are as follows.

To pay every year the yearly rent of five hundred pounds of good merchantable leafe tobacco

during the terms of the above said lives. The tobacco to be packed every year in good order

condition in a good and sufficient hogshead, with as much if by the said Thomas

Brerwood his heirs executors or as shall make the said hogshead full eight pounds clear

of wood and rolled or carryed to the nearest landing to the Mannor and safely housed the

said hogshead packing nails and rolling all at the charge and expence of the said Samuel

Talbie his heirs executors administrators or assigns every year."

It continues on and on, but this gives an idea of the cost of the acreage he leased. (the

above copied exactly as recorded).

All the above information can be found in Annapolis, MD if anyone wants full record.

All of the information found in Maryland so far has been found by MARY VOTH of Des Moines, Iowa and

Rochelle Vandenburg of Virginia Beach, VA., all except the marriages of Samuel & Elizabeth and Ann &

Zephaniah, those were found by Betty Jiminez as before stated.
