Luis Rodriguez de Carvajal, son of Francisco Rodriguez de Matos and Francisca Nunez de Carvajal
(1563 - 1596, burned at the stake as a Jew in a very famous case, nephew of Governor Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva, who died imprisoned by the inquisition)

on December 8, 1596, was burned at the stake in Mexico City. His life is known to us, not merely through inquisition records, but in his own words, for he left to posterity a memoir, letters, poetry and a spiritual testament which together constitute the sole surviving Jewish writings of the Spanish colonial period.

His uncle, Luis de Carvajal, el Conquistador, bore the title "Admiral" and later "Governor of the New Kingdom of Leon," a province of the Viceroyalty of New Spain. Luis, his parents and siblings arrived at the port of Tampico in the entourage of this famous uncle in 1580. In the New World they, along with thousands of other Jews, hoped to find a refuge from the fires of the Inquisition.

Mendirichaga also gives Alonso Rodriguez de Carvajal a brother "hermano lexitimo" Jose Rodriguez de Carvajal, husband of Beatriz de Renteria, daughter of Captian Alonso de Trevino and Mayor de Renteria, as well as a sister Gertrudis de la Vega, wife of Alferez Marcos de las Casas (brother in law of pobaldor Diego de Villarreal). Gertrudis as well as Alonso have many descendants.
