    LifeSketch: William was a coal miner by trade, along with some of his sons. At about 11 A.M., on Friday, April 25, 1856, the Blue Rock Mine caved in. William and his son Thomas were able to make it to safety, but his son William Jr. was trapped in the mine along with 3 other men. Amazingly they were all rescued after a torturous fourteen days and thirteen hours.ll, Pearson, Gatewood and Savage, Who Were Rescued, After Having Been Buried Alive Seven Hundred Feet Underground, For Fourteen Days and 13 Hours Without Food In The Blue Rock Coal Mines", by Robert H. Gillmore, 1856. William Jr.'s account is on pages 29-45.
