Clergyman and Patriot. He was the husband of Abigail Hay and the son of Rev. Joseph and Mary (Moody) Emerson. He graduated from Harvard in the class of 1743 and became minister of the West Parish of Groton, Massachusetts, which was later organized as the town of Pepperell, much to Rev. Emerson's credit.
He was a chaplain to men in his parish who participated in the capture of Louisbourg fortress in Nova Scotia during the French and Indian Wars under Sir William Pepperell.
He was known for powerful but reasoned patriotic sermons leading up to the outbreak of the American Revolution, exhorting his flock to join the patriot cause.
He died in 1775 after becoming ill ministering to Pepperell men encamped with the colonial army in Cambridge.

Exemplary in visiting & sympathizing with his flock – Diligent in improving his Talents – A kind Husband and a tender Parent – a faithful Reprover – a constant Friend – & a true Patriot.
Having ceased from his labors his works follow him.
Rev. Emerson lies near Col. William Prescott, commander of the American troops at the Battle of Bunker Hill.
