Notes about Albert Preston Estes

Did some really amazing things. Some good some not so good and survived a lot. He was shot twice and survived both times. Once he was shot through the stomach and the bullet went all the way through. The doctor cleaned the wound out by drawing a silk hankerchief through the wounds. Wasn't expected to live but did. That time the shooting was over a bag of potatoes. A man had asked if he could help Albert with carrying some of his groceries and Albert let him carry the potatoes. When they got to his house the man wouldn't give him the potatoes but took off instead. Albert tried to chase him down and the man shot him.

The other time he was shot it was over some whiskey. A man had asked him where he could get some and Albert said he would go get him some but when he returned and gave the man the drink and told him how much he owed him the man shot him in the head instead, twice. Both bullets bounced off his tough Estes skull and just grazed him. He was knocked off his horse though which then bolted with Albert's boot caught in the stirrup. If a man hadn't managed to stop the horse he could have been dragged to death. He got into a gunfight in Dodge City when he was doing roundups and killed a man and had to run from the law. Just as he crossed the Red River into Texas he looked back and saw the Marshal who was chasing him come up to the bank on the other side of the river. They waved at each other and went their own ways but Albert never went to Dodge City again. Liked to drink a lot and got into trouble several times because of it. He once lost $10,000 from a cotton crop in 3 days and sold a good farm for $20 when drunk. These stories were told to my father C.W. Estes by his father Charlie Eathel and by Albert Preston himself.

His daughter Nova Estes Jones wrote a book about him in 1975 called "Patriarch of the Clan".

Was delivered by Dr. Willoughby Adams who one of his brothers was named for. The homestead on which Dr. Willoughby Adams lived, died and was buried was owned by a descendant of Albert's father Absalom as of 1975.

In March of 1873 as a young man of 18 he traveled alone from Illinois to Texas to try and get on as a trail hand on the big cattle drives. His horse's name was Traveler. He worked as a trail hand for a good many years making drives as far away as Wyoming. Met and knew all the big names in cattle drives before he met his wife and decided to settle down and farm.
