He moved to Alabama with his grandfather, Moses Hart, his father and his siblings. They settled near Montezuma Village. In the 1830s the family moved near the Pea River in what was then Dale County and is now Coffee County.6 his Uncle Joseph and family were massacred by renegade Indians. One child, Malinda Melissa, survived. Josiah was badly injured and bore a deep scar from an Indian's weapon. He fought in the Indian Wars of 1836 and 1837 in spite of his injury.r, as a private.
