Her middle name may have been Jenkins, perhaps a family name.
Age 15-20 in 1830. Age 20-30 in 1840. Listed age 35 in 1850. Listed age 50 in 1860. Listed as Lizzie, age 68 in 1880. Folks born NC. Matilda and son Charles and family with her.
She willed everything, including the $1000 she was suppose to get from her son Leonard's estate, which Charles, her son and the executor, never gave her, to daughter Matilda.
A brief obituary appears in a Knoxville newspaper for her. Gives her death and burial dates. She "was in her 77th year". No family information was included. Her city death certificate indicates she died 16 July but that was probably the date the information was filled out.
For the moment, we will assume her family was in Knox County when she married. However, there are no Williams' living close to her and Leonard in 1830. However, some possibilities include: Etheldred, with 10022001-111001, Thomas L, with 0000101-1021, (X)Ephriam, with 00010001-00001001, Samuel (listed as Kamene in index!), with 12111001-2111101, Jesse, with 0000001-000001, John, with 10101001-0202001 and Jonathan, with 000110001-00010001. Marked one is best guess out of these people for her folks. The first 3 were in Knoxville proper. Almost all Williams listed for 1830 were the only ones on a particular census page and there were never more than 2 listed on any page.
Benjamin may be the patriarch of the Williams family here. He was 80-90 then, with a female 30-40. He and Ethelred are in Knox County deeds before 1810 so are probably not her dad. Other early Williams include James (1795) and John (1797 but probably died c.1800). None of these appear to have been married in Knox County.
Benjamin Williams died in 1835 and left a will. Mentions wife Nancy, kids John, Jonathan, Nancy Parson, Dululy Hill, Hannah Eliot, Polly Giddus, Benjamin, Samuel, Livesy Branham and Sally Galloway. He had a number of property transactions, many with John (1st in 1815), James (1816), Jesse (1826), William S(1818) and Samuel (1834).
Ethelred was Postmaster at Bean's Station in 1816, owned a store there c.1805, spent time in Nashville, was eventually alderman there, died 1848 and was buried there. He had a will filed in Grainger County: Sons William and James.WILLIAMS, Ethelred, deceased. Appoints William WILLIAMS, James WILLIAMS, Thomas W. HUMES, John H. CROZIER, William A. BROWN & William T. TATE Executors and trustees; advancements on books up to 8 May 1846 to children as follows: to my son William WILLIAMS $24,000.00, my son James WILLIAMS $12,778.00, my daughter Cornelia W. HUMES & her husband Thomas W. HUMES $9,348.00, my daughter Mary W. CROZIER & her husband John H. CROZIER $10, 085.00, my son Joseph WILLIAMS $1,315.00, and my daughter Margaret $999.00, all to have equal share to $25,000; store in Rutledge now occupied by William T. TATE & CO.; land purchased from Nathan GRAY; land sold to Isaac LEBOW on the south boundary of Thomas HENDERSON; lands purchased from COCKE; lands between the lands of the heirs of Thomas GILL, deceased, & the heirs of William F. WILLIAMS, deceased, where upon James PHILLIPS now lives; land in Poor Valley; place where I now reside called Rocky Springs, Grainger County; land purchased from John W. There is also an Alexander that appears in the Administrative records only that may be one of her brothers. He appears to have married Fanny Bowman 1st on 7 Sep 1830. He married 2nd Sally McClun on 27 Mar 1834 but died in 1838. She and young kids (all age 5-10) are in the 1840 census. Benjamin Furguson was thier bondsman and administrator. Jonathan Coker also bought $8.75 worth of items from the estate.
Ephriam died before Apr 1837, when Joel was appointed his administrator. Wife then was Nancy Johnson, who sold some of his land later in 1843. She was appearantly a 2nd wife, as they were married 2 Oct 1831. John D is also mentioned, appearantly another son. A John D married Sarah Ward 20 Oct 1816 in Knox County. This could be a brother, rather than a son. Ephriam was worth about $2500. This Joel appears to have died in 1846, leaving widow Susannah. His records included a debt owed by Cumberland Coker, whose collection possibility was listed as "doubtful".
Only 3 of the above possibilities from 1830 are in Knox County in 1840: Jonathan, John, and Thomas L. There is a Jesse listed but he is age 30-40 with young sons. There is a Jesse of the right age in Wayne County then, no wife but with young children. There is also a Samuel of the right age in Robertson County.
Jonathan died later in 1840. His household then was 000001001-000010001. He too left a will, naming his wife, Elizabeth, sons, Samuel and John W, and daughter, Matilda. He had 2 slaves, Jesse and Jacob. One of his kids and thier spouse is probably with them, perhaps Matilda. Probably the son of Benjamin.
There are multiple Johns in 1840 and it is hard to match them with ones from 1830. A John appears to have died in the late 1840's but his estate was not settled until July 1852, when his property was sold off. Appearantly his wife Mary bought many items. Jesse, an assumed son, was his administrator. Those buying items also included a John, Silas, Jonathan and Marion. He was worth about $200. Probably the son of Benjamin. John, son of "big wig" Joseph, died in 1837.
Only Thomas L is there in 1850, but he was born 1785 in TN (probably actually NC). He left a will, probated Jan 1857, naming seven daughters and one son. His wife was dead then. He was a lawyer, judge and chancellor. He specifically mentioned his law books and slaves. He was the son of Joseph and was not Elizabeth's father, but may have been some other relation.
