    LifeSketch: Son of Mr. John Daley Hayes, who came to New Zealand in the early 1840s, settling at Whangaroa. William resided in the Whangaroa district, being engaged in sheep farming and contracting. Mr Hayes was a Maori linguist, and at one time acted as interpreter at the Native Land Court, Whangaroa. His parents were held in the highest respect by the Maoris and during the Honi Heke trouble in the North were exempt from any molestation and were frequently visited by Honi Hoke's followers. William came to Whangarei in 1906, subsequently taking up farming at Tikipunga and at various times resided in Auckland and Whangarei. Mrs. Hayes died three years before him. There are four sons and six daughters, and over 5O grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
