Joel Stone, the founder of the village. In 1817 he was joined by his brother John, and with him formed the firm of C. & J. Macdonald. In 1826 the firm built a flour mill, which was one of the most complete in Canada, shipping their products direct to England. They were later joined by Colin Macdonald, who became a member of the firm in 1828, and so continued until his death in Cuba, in 1842. John Mac donald was active in politics and served as a member of the Legislative Council of upper Canada. He died in i860 and was buried at Gananoque. Charles Macdonald died in 1826, and was buried near Gananoque, in Willow- bank cemetery.
