LifeSketch: Captain Archibald MacDonell settled in Johnstown, New York Province. He met with Sir William Johnson who promised to give the starving Jacobites land in the Mohawk Valley. MacDonell brought out two shiploads of Highlanders. Among them were 14 or 15 families of Grants. Big John being by then a very old man, his son Angus Grant was the head of the party.784-1945, " John Macdonnell of Leek left Fort William, Scotland for New York in the fall of 1773 on the "Pearl" along with his brother Allan Macdonnell of Caollachie and Alexander Macdonnell of Aberchalder and 425 emigrants. In 1775 they were in the Mohawk Valley, when the Royal Highland Emigrant Regiment, the 84th was formed. John of Leek and Allan of Collachie were appointed captains and Alexander of Aberrchalder a lieutenant, on June 14, 1775. At the time Leek was 68 and too old to engage in such war. In January 1776, six hostages were taken by the Revolutionary Army - Leek, Collachie, Aberchalder, Leek's son Ranald, and Aberchalder's son Hugh. The other was probably Archibald, eldest living son of Leek. Aberchalder's family had reached Quebec by June 1779. The families of Leek and Collachie had not arrived on May 11, 1781, but it was no doubt shortly after this that they reached Canada."
