Notes about John Bent USA to Jamaica- DNA37 - link Ian Campbell

John Bent of Top Hill Plantation According to another researcher, John Bent was a white man of Englishorigin. He was blacksmith from Massachusetts, America and appears to be the first Bentof the Southfield area. Although his ancestors came from England, he was born InMassachusetts on the 15th October 1703. He was raised In America and married an American wife,Elizabeth Badcock at Milton, Massachusetts on the 6th February 1727/28. She was also whiteand produced him 16 children. After she died In 1750, he left Massachusetts and movedto Jamaica. It is unsure if he brought any of his children with him He settled in Jamaica, had more children and by at least 1796 was theowner of Top Hill Plantation near Southfield. A slave Plantation register of 1799 recordedthat he had 19 African slaves on his Plantation and none of them had been In Jamaica formore than 3 years. Also, there had been no births from 1796-98 or deaths of Creoleson his Plantation during the same period. All this suggesting that the 300 acre Plantationwas In it's early beginnings. He had met Anne Rochester, a free Quadroon woman with strong ties to theAccompong Maroons. She was quite wealthy In her own right and owned her own slaves. They had at least 10 children all born In Saint Elizabeth, these were: Dorothy Bent (born abt 1755) Nicholas Bent (born abt 1759) Anne Bent (born abt 1760) William Bent (born abt 1761) John Benjamin Bent (born abt 1763) Henry Bent (born abt 1766) Stephen Bent (born abt 1770) Joseph Bent (born 1773) Elizabeth Bent (born 1781) Susannah Bent Eleanor (born 1785) Some of these children later became land and slave owners In SaintElizabeth, probably due to inheritance from their parent's. There is a strong possibility thatthe second child, Nicholas Bent may be the father of Bernard Ballard Bent. Again, this would needfurther investigations. It is accepted that slaves usually took the surnames of the owners, therefore there would have been many black slaves with the surname of Bent In Saint Elizabethfrom the time period of John Bent.
