LifeSketch: LIFE SKETCH OF RILEY SEVARE ROBERTSf Henry Bryant Roberts and Cyrena Maud Catt. He was the second of their children, his sister, Bessie May, having been born in 1890. He was followed by Winifred in 1898 and Leslie Forrest in 1907.n about 1909 the family moved to Dresden, Kansas, where Henry traded his farm for the local telephone company. The family ran the entire operation. Henry and his son Riley, who by that time was sixteen, even put up the poles and ran the wires to new hookups out in the countryside around Dresden. They didn’t have a minister in the town, but Henry was the Superintendent of the Sunday School.by Bell Telephone Company. monton; so when Henry and Maud sold the telephone company, they decided to move to Tremonton. Riley and his father went to Tremonton first to purchase a dry farm. Henry bought a team of horses for Riley, who was 21, so that he would have a means to earn money. Then he returned to Kansas to bring the rest of the family to Tremonton. nry and Riley built a barn where they lived the first summer after they moved west. Then they built their home.e Buettgenbach Crozier from Tremonton. They were pulling stumps with a steam-driven tractor. The men were riding on the rear platform of the tractor as they went from one point to another. It became necessary for them to stop to take on water. They water gauge was broken, and they did not realize that the water in the boiler was very low. When the cold water entered the boiler a terrific explosion occurred. All three men were severely scalded by the boiling water. Leslie was scalded about the waist and limbs so severely that great patches of flesh were cooked and fell from his body. It was said that the stench of burned flesh could be smelled for miles around. The men were carried to the home of George Crozier, Anna’s brother who lived nearby. Both Mr. McFarland and Riley died within a day of the accident. Riley died 28 December 1917, just three months short of his twenty-fourth birthday.
