    LifeSketch: Second s. of Sir Thomas Tunstall of Thurland Castle, Yorks., by Isabel da. of Sir Nicholas Harington ; uncle to Sir Richard Tunstall, K.G., M.P. (1428-92).10 He was a Yorks. elector 1449 (1) esq. ; and John Tunstall " of Middleham " was, in June 1450, a mainpernor for Richard Tunstall of Westmorland, his nephew.11ddleham ", the Earl of Salisbury's castle, shows him at this time a servant of the Earl. He was on a Cumbrian comn. in 1458.1 Sir Richard Tunstall, attainted in 1461, had forfeited the manor of Leek, Lancs., and in Nov. 1465 this manor was granted to John,2 no doubt in a spirit not hostile to Sir Richard. John Tunstall was exempted as regarded this grant of Leek from the Act of Resumption in 1467.3
