Not surprisingly, he '''married Margaret Hampton in 1761, daughter of Anthony Hampton'''. They had twelve children. Their youngest son, Hampton, married Mary Coalman Martin, a daughter of John (Jack) Martin who built the Revolutionary War era Rock House. he area that was to become Stokes County. During the Revolutionary War, he was known as a Tory, but not a very outspoken one, because he was on friendly terms with the determined Whigs such as Anthony Hampton and Joseph Winston. sentenced to serve in the army. However, he paid for his release and gave security and did not serve at that time. Later on, he is mentioned as Captain Gray Bynum and did serve in the Continental Army. Martin, and Mary Ruth Martin. There could be other unmarked graves as well. Located just outside the wrought-iron fence that surrounds the graveyard, to the north, are four Winston family graves. Only one of the four headstones contains a legible inscription. It reads, “To The Memory of E. H. Winston”. The birth/death dates are illegible.
