{geni:about_me} Eine Urkunde des Kölner Erzbischofs Anno II. über die Befreiung des Hofs Witenhusen von der Zehntpflicht erwähnte die Herren von Wickrath erstmals 1068. Ein Gerlacus de Wickerode, auch Gerlach oder Gerlagh genannt,war bei der Unterzeichnung der Urkunde als Zeuge anwesend. Gerlach scheint eng mit Anno II. befreundet gewesen zu sein und einem bekannten Dynastengeschlecht zu entstammen. Die Berufung zum Vogt der von Anno II. gestifteten AbteiSiegburg weist darauf hin. Möglicherweise handelt es sich um einen jüngeren Bruder von Gerhard Flamenses. Die Burg Wickrath, als „Castrum Wichinrod“ bezeichnet, wird erstmals in der ab 1104 verfassten Biografie von Anno II. erwähnt. Demnach ließ er kurz vor seinem Tod im Dezember 1075 den Grafen Gerlach, Herrn der Burg Wickrath, zu sich kommen.

Nach Gerlachs Tod ging die '''Burg Wickrath''' in den Besitz von '''Graf Gerhard I'''. aus der '''Familie Hochstaden''', dem älteren Bruder des Kölner Erzbischofs '''Hermann III. von Hochstaden''', über. Einige Quellen sehen in ihm einen Sohn Gerlachs,andere Quellen nennen ihn seinen Schwiegersohn, der die Tochter Gerlachs geheiratet habe.
