Notes about Sophia Ora Barker

After Luther's death, Sophia and her children lived with her father in St. Pauls for a while and with son Gordon and his wife Annie Belle for about a year. She bought 65 acres for $500 from Mrs. Annie Lewis Singletary (son Luther's future mother-in-law) in the Hickory Grove Community. Around 1931, with the help of friends and family, they built a white frame house with German siding and a front porch. They would have paid their help if they had wanted it, but only one person did. Mr. Seth Lewis was paid $20 to construct the chimney. Sophia would go out and work in the fields with her older children and was also known to be a 'crack shot' who never missed with her gun.

Around 1937, Sophia married Mr. Seth Lewis. They moved to his small home nearby but left her children in the home they had built about 6 years earlier.

Around 1938, daughter Margaret began the tradition of the Birthday Dinner in her mother's honor. Originally held at the homes of her children, it eventually became the Davis Family Reunion and was held at the Hickory Grove community building.

After several strokes, Sophia died of heart failure.
L C Davis and Sophia Ora Barker were married at home on the 24th day of Dec, 1902 in the presence of A H Barker and W S Johnson. Rev R L Byrd officiated at the marriage in teh Barker home.
