John Windlekite or John Wendell Kite of Augusta County, Virginia was the forefather of the Kite family, according to the History of the Kite Family by Mrs. Merle Kite Dorius, 1717 Kearney Street, Petaluma, CA, 94952. [ NOTE: It is extremely unusual for anyone, born prior to the Revolutionary period, to have a middle name.] John Kite must have died prior to 1784 as he does not show in the census for East Rockingham County. While records of John Kite's descendants do show in the county of Augusta the majority of the records can be found in Rockingham County. [NOTE: The county boundry lines in Virginia changed several times.] By the 1784 census of Virginia, there were three Kite families living in East Rockingham County: George Kite, John Kite and William Kite. These men were figured as children of John Wendell Kite.
