Notes about Guillaume III de Melun

Blason en 1630 du castelet d'entrée au château de Biez, avec collier de chevalier de La Toison d'Or. Le pendant est celui d'Ernestine d'Arenberg qui surmonte la sortie de ce même porche. Note sur BIEZ: Les premières mentions du Château du Biez remontent au XIIe siècle. Vers 1260, le propriétaire est un certain Robert seigneur de Vergne ou de Vergnies qui épouse sa fille à Jean d'Antoing. Au milieu du XIVe siècle, Isabelle d'Antoing épouse Gérard de Werchin, pair et sénéchal héréditaire de Hainaut. Ce site devient le lieu résidentiel des illustres noms de la famille de Werchin. Le roi de France, Charles V, y vient même le 17 septembre 1368. Plusieurs ducs de Bourgogne s’y rendent également. Au XVe siècle, l'héritage entre dans la famille des Barbençon qui doivent reprendre le nom et les armes de Werchin (1444). Durant la guerre avec les Espagnols, Guillaume de Melun transforme le du Biez en résidence principale et restaure l'entrée du site (1630). Lorsque la guerre reprend entre l'Espagne et la Hollande, en 1634, il est accusé de trahison et doit fuir le territoire. Le château est alors à nouveau occupé par des soldats espagnols. Dès ce moment, il ne fera plus office de demeure permanente.
